One of the things I enjoy most about commissions is the opportunity to create something deeply personal. This piece was created for my sister-in-law, a long-time fan of the Chinese singer-songwriter Chen Chusheng.
Rather than focusing on a single portrait, the artwork brings together a number of references connected to his career and public identity. Elements from his music, visual motifs associated with his work, his mascots, and the artist himself are combined into a single composition.
For fans, music often becomes associated with particular periods of life, memories and experiences. Songs have a way of accompanying us through different chapters, becoming tied to places, relationships and moments in time. Over the years, artists can become part of those stories too.
This watch was created as a celebration of that connection. It serves as both a tribute to Chen Chusheng and a reflection of the enjoyment and meaning that his work has brought to someone who has followed it for many years.
