The tourbillon was originally invented by Abraham-Louis Breguet to address a surprisingly simple problem: gravity.
In a traditional mechanical watch, gravity exerts a constant influence on the movement. The tourbillon was designed to counteract some of those effects by continually rotating the escapement, averaging out small errors and improving accuracy. More than two centuries later, it remains one of watchmaking’s most recognisable complications.
This piece takes that idea and pushes it into the realm of imagination.
The artwork explores the relationship between gravity, time and space. Modern physics tells us that gravity is more than just a force pulling objects towards one another; it shapes the very fabric of space and influences the passage of time itself. In a sense, gravity and time are inseparable.
Here, gravity becomes visible. The dial appears to tear open around the tourbillon, as though the complication itself has become so powerful that it is pulling apart the fabric of the watch. The exposed movement becomes the centre of a cosmic distortion, revealing a glimpse into something beyond the surface.
The result is a piece that sits somewhere between watchmaking and science fiction; inspired by a complication created to combat gravity, while imagining what might happen if gravity ultimately won.
