This piece was created for a collector who requested a design inspired by the refined elegance of traditional gongbi painting. Known for its precision and delicate detail, gongbi relies upon careful line work and controlled composition to create images that feel both intricate and restrained.
Recreating that aesthetic on a watch dial presented an interesting challenge. At this scale, even the finest brushstrokes can appear too heavy. To achieve the effect, I used extremely thin lines and carefully matched their colour to the layers beneath. This softened the contrast and allowed the line work to appear finer and more delicate than would otherwise have been possible.
The subject matter draws upon the quiet beauty often found in traditional Chinese painting, where atmosphere and balance are as important as detail. Rather than competing for attention, individual elements work together to create a sense of calm and harmony.
